Living With Pets in West Campus

If you’re deciding on whether to bring your furry companion with you to school or debating on if you wish to make that huge commitment to getting a new pet, there are some things to keep in mind.

First, many apartments, condos and houses do not accept pets for many reasons. As you know, puppies can do a number on your carpet when first potty training them. Crate training is a very effective way but there will always be accidents until they get their routine down. Also, since you are a busy student, it can be difficult to get home in time to let poor Fluffy out and leaving dogs alone for extended periods of time can be damaging to their psyche. They want to love and be around you as much as possible, you are their world! But due to the potential damage and lack of responsibility many people have shown regarding cleaning up after their pets, it has forced many management companies to do “no pet” policies.

Second, keep in mind that if you find a pet friendly property, they all charge extra fees and deposits for your pet. Most average around $300 and can tack on pet rent and non refundable fees as well. That is very standard so don’t let that surprise you come lease signing time. The money is worth it, of course! As long as you are a responsible pet owner and make the necessary steps to ensure your house and your yard is taken care of and cleaned up after, you won’t have to worry about getting your deposit back.

Third, to ensure that you receive your full deposit for your pet and you don’t acquire more fees on top of it, you will need to pet treat any carpet in your unit. You’ll also need to make sure the cleaning crew does a thorough job cleaning any pet reminisce. There are plenty of cleaning options for you to make sure you did all you could to get Fluffy’s hair and smell out of your unit.

Bottom line, if you have the funds, time, and are open to the responsibility it requires to have a pet at your apartment, condo, or house in West Campus, then I say go for it! You can’t beat the companionship of your furry friend. A pets love is unconditional and priceless! Here are some tips for being a responsible pet owner in West Campus:

  • Always keep pet waste bags on you! It can be a large fine of $500 or more if you are caught not cleaning up after your pet. Also, you don’t like stepping or smelling doggy poop so why would anyone else?
  • Crate train your puppy to help potty train them and keep them on a schedule- take them out at the same time each day and they will eventually get on your schedule.
  • Vacuum and clean your house at least once a week, twice a week would be best. Control the hair!
  • Always clean out your litter boxes once a day! It’s better for you and your furry friend. Kitties love clean boxes, don’t you love a clean bathroom?
  • Exercise your pets! Tired pets are happy pets and will do much better with training when physical activity is involved.

ENJOY YOUR PETS! That’s what they are there for! Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Holidays in West Campus

For some of you, the holidays mean having friends over for a big feast and enjoying the (maybe) cool weather we get each holiday season here in Texas. Others this means you’ll be leaving your West Campus apartment, condo, or house for several weeks at a time. As exciting as it is to have this time off and decompress from the grueling school work, there are proper measures to take during your hiatus. Keep in mind that not only are you leaving, so are thousands of other students. Many people head to their parents or guardians in their home town and get to feel like they are back at home in Mom and Dads. With that being the situation for most, there will be many empty homes in West campus.

To ensure your home is safe and you don’t come back to a very expensive electric bill due to the AC running for four weeks non stop while you’re gone, you will want to make sure to turn up the AC systems or turn off your heating system. That will save on your bill especially since you won’t be home, you don’t want to be charged for that time. It is also recommended to unplug your electrical devices, just having them plugged in uses electricity. And most importantly, lock up your house and turn on any alarm system you may have. Most break ins happen when students are gone for the holidays since West Campus can appear like a ghost town during this time. However, if you purchased renters insurance which is HIGHLY recommended you do, in the unfortunate situation that something of yours is taken, it will be replaced with your insurance. This post isn’t to scare you but to keep you aware of the possibilities of not being home for weeks at a time.

The vibe in West Campus during Thanksgiving and Christmas is quite interesting. All of those places that have long lines won’t and some cafes actually close for the holidays, that’s how much they rely on students for their business! There is plenty of parking! And not near the amount of traffic on all of these streets such as Rio Grande, Nueces, San Gabriel, etc. You will be able to cruise along with no delays.

Regardless if you’re in town for the holidays or you choose to go home, be safe and keep an eye out for your neighbors who might be gone during this time and would love to have someone just peak at their door from time to time. It’s always good karma to be a good neighbor because you’ll never know when you may need a hand!

Wishing everyone stays safe during this Thanksgiving Holiday!

Where to watch the UT Football games in West Campus!

utfootball

Now that fun football season is upon us and The University of Texas seems to be kicking tail so far, there are many people who don’t have the luxury of actually attending the football games. So, what is the next best thing? Everyone talks about tailgating, which is a blast but where do you go once the tailgate is over and the game is on?

There are plenty of hot spots in West Campus, so close you can feel the exciting vibe of the game just blocks away on the other side of Campus. One great spot is Cain & Abels on 24th Street and Rio Grande. With an array of televisions to get a good view of the game, Can & Abels also has great American food along with dozens of beer on tap. Cain & Abels has been a part of the UT West Campus culture since 1991 and continues to be a hopping spot, especially during football games.

Another great venue with some of the biggest, HD flat screen TV’s I have ever seen are located at Tap 24, right where you guessed it, on 24th Street. Sitting in the heart of West Campus, Tap 24 has great appetizers that compliment their wide selection of adult beverages and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Any place you sit has a great view of one of their many TVs. Tap 24 seems to always host people who are very excited when their team does well, so be ready to cheer!

Last but not least, The Local is a great hangout and a more low key, hole in the wall bar that offers pool, cornhole and other games to play while you support your favorite sports team. The Local has a great selection of craft beer and a full bar that will make anyone have a great time during games.

If you’d like to get out of the West Campus are and more towards East Campus closer to the stadium, there is a bundle of places to hang out so close to the stadium, you can feel the rumble. The Varsity Pizza and Pints is a perfect place to experience the school spirit and enjoy some fresh slices and ices. You can’t beat the location to the game, especially if you plan on tail gating before the madness on the field begins.

Austin is full of pride, especially for The University of Texas Longhorns and there are plenty of places to show your support for the athletes without going to the games.

Hook em!
