As the Summer winds down and you get either anxious about moving into your new digs that you pre-leased 9-10 months prior to this move or you feel unmotivated about packing up your belongings to move back home or to a new city once you’ve finished school. Moving can be tricky and especially when every other person in the area is doing the same thing at the same time you are, you find yourself having to schedule necessary contractors months in advance to make sure you’re totally packed up and out of your unit in time.
Here are some tips I have learned moving countless times in Austin, Texas, including West and North Campus several times. Hirer movers! If you have roommates that are willing to pitch in for movers, even better! Not only does it save you time and your back muscles, it stimulates the Austin economy, win win. It can also help you stay organized when you have all of that left over junk you don’t want to take with you. You can catch the next trash cycle before everyone else so your not piling items next to the dumpster or on top. There are even some companies that will bring boxes and such and pack your things for you. If you don’t think it’s worth the money, try moving in 105 degrees with a heat index of 115.
If your new place has a lease that started before you are out of your current place, start moving stuff as soon as you can and make several trips. I find that has been the easiest way to move and leave the big stuff for the end or for the movers! When all of your things are out, you must always remember to professionally clean the unit. Many tenants don’t realize that they are responsible for doing so and can be charged fees by the management company for having to clean for them. Knowing this can save a lot of confusion when you receive your deposit refund and see deductions. Always treat your West Campus apartment the same way you would treat your parents home because during that lease, you are the owners and the responsible parties for the property. However, if your new place has a move in that started after your current lease expires, that can be quite tricky, especially if it’s just for a few days. Usually in West Campus, it’s difficult to extend your lease since everyone is feeling the burn of turn! And they are all on a schedule to get tenants in and out before school starts. You do have some options, there are storage units you can rent and there are PODS you can purchase as well to store your items safely in between places.
Moving is a pain but it can be much easier following some necessary steps, I’ve always thought dishing out some cash for help has been worth it in the past. Remember, overflowing the trash cans can lead to fees and let’s face it, no one wants to drive around with junk all over the street. Be aware of the trash cycles each week and try to throw items out in batches weeks before you move. Also, we live in Texas, it’s a buggy state! Keep in mind that when you’re moving in and out of units, everyone else is too and that can stir up a lot of bugs. Typically, a new unit you’re moving into is not going to have bug problems, it’s usually the fact that they are being stirred up from all the commotion. It’s gross, I know but thats the nature of the beast we live in. TEXAS!
